Nanoparticles play a role in the production of many different products. They occur naturally in them, but are often added to improve the properties of a product. For example, nanoparticles ensure that certain products have a better substance. The size of the particles is an important factor. At Solids Solutions we do a lot of research into the properties of nanoparticles. Various instruments and techniques are used to accurately determine the size of the particles.
Solids Solutions knowledgeWith the knowledge we gain from the research, we can help product developers when they get stuck in the production process. But we also share our knowledge of particle and powder technology in other ways. We offer courses and seminars and regularly organise presentations and events in this field.
Size determination by sedimentationAn effective way to determine the size of nanoparticles is sedimentation. In the case of sedimentation nanoparticles are added to a liquid. Then the sedimentation rate of the particles is analysed. This is done using X-rays, so the measurements can be taken relatively quickly. The size of the particles is then determined.
Dynamic light scattering with laserThe size of powder particles can be calculated using dynamic light scattering. In this method, particles are scattered in a certain medium, after which they are illuminated with a laser beam. This provides insight into the scattering pattern of the particles. This is mainly determined by the size of the particles, as this affects how the particles move in relation to each other. Thus, not only information about the particle size is obtained, but also about the particle size distribution. On the Solids Solutions website you can read which other techniques we use in our laboratory. |
